New England

We flew home in December to get to see our daughters and all of their families. We decided the risk of bad weather was outweighed by getting to see everyone since we are only wintering in the southeast this year. So we left our home to be babysat by Bill’s aunt and uncle in Louisiana. As we traveled between Massachusetts, New Jersey and Maine the storms were in the perfect pattern to only dump ice or snow once we had arrived at our destinations. We had so much fun visiting at each home that we forgot all about taking pictures almost everywhere. But the memories will never fade!

We flew from cold and snowy New England back to the warmth of Louisiana to pick up the motor home from Uncle Alan and Ethel’s house. From there our travels took us to our first Seabee (US Navy) base FamCamp in Mississippi.

Hancock County, MS

A two day sightseeing trip from the Seabee base took us first to the John C. Stennis Space Center in Hancock County, MS. Unfortunately, tours at the Space Center have been stopped because of their current mission that is not open to the public. They have moved the visitor center a few miles down the road to the Infinity Science Center. We spent the day watching videos, participating in interactive exhibits and touring the static displays.

New Orleans, LA

We headed over to the French Quarter in New Orleans when we left the Space Center. We spent the evening checking out some of the famous sites in the downtown area, then settled into an historic hotel for the night. We had an early start Thursday morning because we wanted to get to the National World War II Museum soon after it opened. We knew there were several buildings and exhibits to go through, so it would be a full day. We could not believe the thoroughness of the Museum, walking visitors through each stage of the war, moving from campaign to campaign and taking us through the years with actual footage and detailed descriptions. Photos within the individual campaigns were not allowed, so the slides below are of the exterior and aircraft displays. The final building was still under construction, so a return visit has been added to our journeys several years from now.

Lake Park, Georgia

We moved over to Grassy Pond Recreation Area, a secluded Air Force military camping area set in the Spanish moss laden trees around Grassy Pond in Lake Park, Georgia. One of our favorite times of the day was sitting by the pond in the swing at sunset. We decided to stay in the area for a month while we planned our travels for the spring and summer and took a few sightseeing trips. Bill had a lot of training to get ready for his next marathon in February. We were so close to the Florida border that his longer runs took him interstate! And his shorter runs were all through a lovely subdivision across the road from our campground. We couldn’t resist taking a picture of him by “his” road in the housing development.
